Under Bed Storage
One of the most commonly misused storage solutions is the room that you have under your bed. This is most often a dark place that shoe boxes of old stuff is placed and forgotten about. Over the years the dust bunnies build up and when you do pull things out, you wonder why you kept them half the time. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are many approaches to using the space under your bed to make it a clean, active place.
How much room you have under your bed is also important to how you can use it. Many bed frames sit close to the ground giving very little room to really use it well. To make it useful for more than just the dust and the cat, you can use bed lifters (or bed raisers) to give you some more room. A bed lifter is a stand that goes under each support leg of the bed to raise it further up in the air. They come in different heights and generally look something like a jack stand. Figure out how much storage that you are going to need or what kind of under bed storage system you are planning on using and then get the bed lifter that will give you the needed room.
There are a few different approaches to organizing the room under the bed. Sometimes this problem is solved for you as nicer bed frames already have some under bed storage drawers. You can find your own under bed storage drawer but cost of these units and putting them in may take you out of that market.
Under bed storage boxes would be the cheapest way to go. These could simply be cardboard boxes that you were able to come up with. You will be able to keep things organized but getting to them may be a little more difficult. However, if you do not plan on access these items very much, then this would be the way to go.
Under bed storage bins might be the answer for you. Think of a clear plastic bin with lids. They will be easier to slide around then cardboard and being clear, you will be able to see what’s in them faster. Get some with a lid and you will keep out the dust and be able to keep everything nicely organized.
There are many different types of under bad storage containers that will work nicely for your storage solutions. Another option to make it better is sliding shelf system. This is a low shelf on rails that slides in and out from under the bed. You place your items (or items in containers) and this really helps access. This system will cost and you will have to see if you have the room for a shelf system to slide out on. I have a nightstand on both sides of my bed so I would have to be careful on what size of sliding shelf that I installed. A slid out system aould be like shelves on rollers or simply rancks on wheels for under bed storage on wheels.
Take a look under your bed and see what kind of solution will work for you. Take into account how much you are going to use the area in relation to the budget that you have available for it. A few cardboard boxes for the budget minded to a full sliding system on a raised bed might be the ticket.
